Candle Safety Basics

Simple safety habits help every candle burn feel calm, controlled, and enjoyable.

A good candle should feel relaxed, but an open flame still deserves attention. Safety habits are simple, and they make every burn feel calmer.

Burn within sight

Never leave a lit candle unattended. Blow it out before leaving the room, going to sleep, stepping outside, or starting anything that will pull your attention away for more than a moment.

Choose the right surface

Use a stable, heat-safe surface with open space around the vessel. Keep the candle away from shelves, curtains, papers, plants, drafts, vents, and anything that can catch heat.

Keep children and pets away

Place candles where they cannot be bumped, reached, or pulled down. A good candle spot should be steady, visible, and out of the flow of everyday movement.

Do not move hot candles

Liquid wax and warm vessels can spill or burn. Wait until the flame is out, the wax has hardened, and the vessel feels cool before moving or covering the candle.

Watch the final burn

Stop using the candle when about 1/2 inch of wax remains. Burning too low can overheat the vessel because there is less wax left to absorb heat.

Safety checklist

  • Trim the wick before lighting.
  • Keep the wax pool clear.
  • Burn on a heat-safe surface.
  • Keep away from drafts and flammable materials.
  • Extinguish before leaving the room.
  • Stop near the bottom of the vessel.

When in doubt, follow the product label and choose the safer burn. A candle should add warmth to the room, not worry.
